Timing Is the Whole Game
The best BD call isn't the one with the best opener. It's the one that lands the week a hiring manager just got budget approved, or the day after a key person handed in their notice. Claude can help you find those moments before your competitors do.
Step 1: Connect Claude to the Web and Your Email
You need two connectors for this guide to work properly.
Where to find them: Settings → Customize → Connectors → Enable Web Search + Gmail (or Outlook)
Step 2: Set Up a Morning Signal Scan
Use Scheduled Tasks to run this every morning at 7:30am for your top 20 target accounts:
"Search for news in the last 7 days about each of these companies: [list]. Flag anything that suggests hiring activity: funding rounds, new office openings, leadership hires, acquisitions, headcount growth, or anyone senior leaving. Save the results as 'BD Signals [date]' on my Desktop."
You sit down to a pre-built list of who to call and why. Every morning.
Where to find it: Claude Desktop app → Cowork → Schedule a task
Step 3: Spot the Four Signals Worth Acting On
Tell Claude what to look for specifically:
Funding round. A company that just raised is about to hire. Ask Claude: "Has [Company] raised funding in the last 90 days? If so, how much and what stage?"
Leadership change. A new MD, VP, or Head of Department almost always rebuilds their team within six months. Ask Claude: "Has there been a senior leadership change at [Company] in the last 6 months?"
Rapid headcount growth. Ask Claude: "Has [Company] been hiring heavily in the last 3 months? What roles and at what seniority?"
Key person departure. Ask Claude: "Has anyone senior left [Company] recently? Any LinkedIn announcements or news coverage?"
Step 4: Check Your Own Inbox for Signals
With Gmail or Outlook connected, ask Claude:
"Go through my emails from [Company] in the last 6 months. Is there anything that suggests a change in their hiring plans: urgency, new roles mentioned, budget conversations, complaints about their current process?"
Your inbox is full of signals you've forgotten about. Claude hasn't.
Where to find it: Settings → Customize → Connectors → Gmail or Outlook
Step 5: Turn the Signal Into the Opener
Once you've found the trigger, ask Claude:
"A recruiter who places [sector] professionals is about to call [Name] at [Company]. The trigger is [funding round / leadership hire / key departure]. Write a 30-second cold call opener that references this naturally without sounding like you've been stalking them."
Turn on Extended Thinking for this step. The difference in quality is significant.
Where to find it: Model selector → Extended Thinking ON → Select Opus
The Point
Most recruiters call their list in order. The best ones call when there's a reason to. Claude doesn't forget to check. It doesn't get distracted. Set it up once and it surfaces the signal every morning so you're always calling with a reason, not just a number.
